The dream for the formation of Ajesola Solarin Majekodunmi Foundation (ASMAF) was inspired by passion borne out of the experience of the founder Professor (Mrs.) Ajesola Majekodunmi as the first female undergraduate of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, having being registered as a medical student in 1962. After a successful career in academics and upon retirement from Lagos University Teaching Hospital and College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Professor Majekodunmi as a way of giving back to the society having enjoyed scholarship all through her life, was inspired to set up ASMAF, for the benefit of mankind in appreciation of the immense kindness shown to her by Almighty God. It is to affect positively successive generations of Nigerians through concentration on the education and empowerment of the girl-child, by devoting the foundation to female indigent students based on her observation way back in her undergraduate days, that some brilliant but indigent female students in public Universities go through a lot of stress to pay their school fees..

THE BEGINNING
Consequently, with this self motivated passion which she had nursed over the years. Professor Ajesola Majekodunmi, at the age of 70 years, when her likes would start enjoying their retirement, laid the foundation of ASMAF duly incorporated on the 28th September, 2008, and formally launched on November 5, 2009, principally dedicated to raising funds for and awarding scholarships to bright but financially handicapped young Nigerian b females for tertiary level of education inc professional courses, as well as th leadership and life skills development. to professional careers in Accountancy, Architecture, Law, Geology, Medicine, Dentistry and Engineering, with the recipients also participating in various leadership training programmes to further impact on them in developing their leadership skills with provision for attachment to mentors and role models in their respective field of disciplines.

THE GOAL

The Goal of ASMAF is to promote, development of qualitative female facilitate and contribute to the

Nigerian professionals and leaders. While speaking at the launching of ASMAF Professor Majekodunmi stressed the need for the girl-child to be given the best opportunity in education so that she could become one to be reckoned with in the society. While acknowledging government efforts in the area of girl-child education, she believed much is still needed to be done by individuals, corporate bodies and other organizations.

In the training of the girl- child, as government cannot do everything. The Professor of Ophthalmology added that ASMAF was founded in recognition of the fact that exercising the full potential of the female talent would move the country to greater heights, stressing that young woman needed the necessary support and opportunities that would prepare them for their respective profession where they are currently under represented.
